The runway my plane landed on when I flew into McMurdo is here...but not for long. Located a mile or two off McMurdo on the frozen McMurdo Sound, the runway must be moved to the permanent ice toward the middle of the Austral summer. Then, only skied planes, such as the LC-130 Hercules,  can land on the snow runway. I skied out to the runway to see it before it is moved and washed away.
 

Perfect timing! Just as I was making my way around the back of the "airport," this plane took off. The front skis of this LC-130 have just pulled up off the ground. That's Mount Discovery in the background.
 

Brian (left) and Drew were out working at the runway when I ran into them.

That sign will be gone soon as will all the ice under it. I figured this was one of my last chances to get this view of town.
